Dutch is a West Germanic language widely known for being Netherlands official language. But did you knew it was also one of the official languages in Belgium? However, most people there speak Flemish, the variety of Dutch spoken in northern Belgium that differ in accent, vocabulary, and expressions from Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands. Dutch is also the official language in Suriname and Dutch Caribbean municipalities. It belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family, like German, English, and Scandinavian languages. It’s written with the Latin alphabet, except it has one additional character: the diagraph “ij”, which often functions like a single letter. Many of its vocabulary and grammatical structures share roots with English and German, that’s why some people tend to say learn Dutch is easier if you already speak one of those two languages!

Today, around 25 million people speak Dutch as their first language, most of them in the Netherlands (about 17 million speakers) and Belgium (about 6.5 million).
