Introduction to Korean language.

When we say "Korean", the first things that probably come to your mind are K-pop stars, famous K-dramas, even K-beauty... But let's dig deeper into Korean culture!

Korean (한국어 / 조선어) is spoken as a first language by approximately 81 million people, mainly in South Korea and North Korea, where it's the official language. South Korean is also known as "Hangugeo" (한국어), and North Korean as "Chosŏnŏ" (조선어). Originally, Korean was written with Chinese characters derived from Literary Chinese, called "Hanja". Now, it's written with the Hangul alphabet, which was created in the 15th century. It's one of the youngest alphabets in the world, admired for being one of the most logical writing systems, as the shapes of its letters are based on how the mouth and tongue move when pronouncing the words.

Nowadays, Korean language and culture are rising worldwide, because of the global interest in South Korean pop-culture, including K-pop, K-dramas and films, series and tv shows, even lifestyle. This phenomenon is called Hallyu (한류), or the Korean wave. It was first coined in China at the end of the nineties to describe the surge in popularity of South Korean culture through Asia, but its influence has continued to grow until it now reached the entire world. We bet you've already come across it in some way!
