Introduction to Greek language.

They all come from Ancient Greek! 🏛️

Greek is one of the oldest Indo-European languages., with origins traced in the Balkan peninsula around the 3rd millenium BC, though it may have been spoken before. This language has evolved and spanned through the millenia, laying a solid foundation for the development of other languages, and influencing Western linguitics and cultural heritage.
Greek language history is traditionaly divided into 6 major periods, from the Neolithic era to modern days.

Greek Language Timeline

Proto-Greek

The assumed last ancestor of all Greek varieties, before the Neolithic/Bronze Age migration.

Mycenaean Greek

Language of the Mycenaean civilization, recorded in Linear B tablets from the 15th century BC.

Ancient Greek

The language of the Archaic and Classical periods, known throughout the Roman Empire.

Koine Greek

The lingua franca of the Eastern Mediterranean and New Testament Greek.

Medieval Greek

Byzantine Greek, spanning from Koine to the 15th century with both vernacular and learned forms.

Modern Greek

Derived from Medieval Greek; the language of modern Greece, with standard and dialectal varieties.

Throughout its long history, Greek has played a crucial role in Western world evolution, serving as the medium for many literature masterpieces, like Homer epics, or the New Testament of Christian Bible. In addition, it has been a primary source of international scientific and technical vocabulary, providing thousands of terms still used today in fields ranging from medicine to mathematics and philosophy.

Now, Greek counts about 13.5 million native speakers, from Greece, but also Cyprus, Albania, Italy, and other regions like the Balkans.
